Issue 08, Staging Creation, picks up the notion of the stage, after we’ve come to realise that a stage can take many forms.

The ways in which we get ready for stages, how we relate to our own creation and our public, and how we set up stages through tools like social media are various. Staging Creation presents facets of something that we have in common, no matter if we are professional handbalancers or not: a voluntary representation of the self towards the outer world.

(HAND-)STANDING ON PARADOXES

The twenty-first century comes along with a specific group of new stages: social media. Handbalancer and Breakdancer Yann Deffays shares his thoughts on what this actually means for (handstand-) artists, pointing out paradoxes such as an increasing standardisation of content while everyone is looking for individuality.

KEEPING THINGS MOVING BY PUTTING THINGS TO BED

As a handbalancer with a lot of experience in independent creation, Imogen Huzel writes about the life cycle of a show, referring to the fact that processes of creation are always a just a caption of a moment in the life of an artist, and why it makes sense to put a show to bed in order to liberate yourself for new personal and professional development and creative adventures.

SURVEY: THOUGHTS ON BEING ON STAGE

There are numerous ways in which handbalancers experience performing on stage, prepare mentally and physically, and perceive the relationship with the audience. Our editor Meret Meier spoke to the artists Alvin Nilsen Nygaard, Amie Patching, Andrey Moraru and Natalie Reckert to know what they have in mind before showtime, when a skill is ripe for the stage, and why it can help to imagine that you are on the moon.

#CIRCUSSOWHITE

Who does actually perform on European stages, and how can we approach structural inequality in terms of ethnicity that exist amongst the performing arts just in the same way as in daily life? Majo Cázares presents a critical perspective on the political dynamics in the European circus landscape with regard to the representation of its actors, taking a look back to history and referring towards future strategies to face this problem.
